Quite possibly the most embarrassing thing to be posted here.

I wrote this story last year. Allow me to qualify it as being the most embarrassing thing I’ve ever posted here. Considering that I personify my insecurities with sharp wit & masochistic delight in every third entry, that’s quite an accomplishment (but it’s all part of my back up plan for a schizophrenia defense in case something goes awfully, horribly wrong). First, it’s fan fiction, self-insertion fan fiction. I use & abuse the copy written concepts & characters of Mr. Simon R. Green’s Nightside series. If you have never been experienced to Mr. Green’s works please don’t let my amateurish prose dissuade you from searching them out. If you enjoy noir, fantasy, or modern day occult settings, you won’t be disappointed. Second, it reveals some of my innermost feelings for the person very special to me. I wrote this over a year ago & I still feel the same way now.

Chapter 1. Lessons We Learn From Our Fathers.

Ahh, childhood. The magical time of your life that you can always look back to fondly and… sorry… I can only shovel so much bull before my metaphoric back muscles (um, the muscles I use to move metaphors around) begin to give. What childhood really is a mostly confusing time when there’s so much to learn and rules that no one could or would explain. It’s also where we pick up most of the phobias, quirks, and enmities that we carry through out our lives. The one I’m experiencing right now that involves shoes. Years I spent walking down cold, quiet slate hall ways made me hyper conscious to the sound of my own foot steps, trying to minimize the sound I produced in an attempt to escape notice. Rainy days were the worst; it added a special squishing quality that I could swear would be heard hundred of yards away. I outgrew the whole wanting to be ignored aspect of life but there was still something about the sound that my shoes made when they were wet that {giraffe bleat}ed on my parade. It didn’t help this time my right shoe was saturated with the ichors resulting from encounter with the local thug culture that resulted in certain other problems that would have to be seen to before the end of the day (night? Generally agreed on cycle of time? I’m still getting use to this place). In short, it put me in an increasingly foul mood that was apparently perfect for where I was going, this bar called Strangefellows. I asked an acquaintance, a coinsure of drinking establishments if there ever was one, about the place when I got my orders and Larry said, and I quote ”{hic} Mike (I’m relatively certain he sees three of me. He’s trying to address the one in the center) think of that place like it’s the Anti-Callahan’s Place, man. Shared pain is mocked, shared joy is alien, and if time travelers show up to save the world, it’s because they want to consume it later. Don’t cop an attitude with the staff (he was giving me a serious hairy eye ball here. In theory I can be perfectly agreeable, in theory.) and for god’s sake, stay away from the bar snacks.” So here I am I Strangefellows, you have to take two steps down to get there, one was a staircase, the other was social.

I was playing the counting game by the time I made it to the door. Step, squick, step, squick, step, squick. Only 8 more cycles till I made it to the bar. The bartender, who looks a Hot Topic employee who was never told to take the uniform off when he turned 35, used a rag to more evenly distribute the filth on a glass so that it might pass for clean, noticed me after few moments. “You ever thought about wiping your feet when you come into an establishment?” I gave the place a theatrical look around and said “I considered it, but decided my shoes would be cleaner if I didn’t.” That got his rancor up, so he wasn’t just an employee, he was the owner. He turned address me directly and finally got a good look. Whatever comment he had built up was lost when he seen my present condition, or the condition of my clothes at this point. Instead what came out was “Excuse me, you seem to be suffering from 3, no 4 sucking chest wounds” Oh goody, I get to explain this again.

“No, the meat has healed sufficiently in the last few moments. It’s the jacket that took the worst part of those asshats rediscovering what was once the funniest joke in the universe.” He made an inquisitive gesture so I continued. “Yes, underneath the blood here you can see target I had painted on the jacket over my heart. Every once while some clown decides to bone up on their marksmanship by taking some shots. The formerly funniest joke would be the look on their faces as they realize that if being shot, stabbed, pierced, perforated, or ventilated there could seriously inconvenience my day, I wouldn’t have a target over it, now would I? It usually lasts about 1.2 seconds, then I pummel them into oblivion.”

Apparently morbid humor was something we shared because he asked the follow up “Why isn’t funny anymore?” “Because of the cost of constantly repairing the jacket. Or maybe I’m just getting older.” He harrumphed and said, “Happens to the best of us. And the people who brought about your need for dry cleaning this time?” “Just some of your local colour. They were just a few lads that had issues. And guns. Now they have issues with where I holstered their guns” Another inquiring motion from him. “Nothing that reconstructive surgery and years of counseling won’t help them overcome.” “But they’re alive?” he asked “Yes, I can’t go around killing everyone who takes a dislike to me. I’d never get anything else done and the world would be a lonelier place.” He mused, “An American that doesn’t kill at the slightest provocation, we truly live in an age of wonders. What do you drink?” Hm, let’s see, what would be my least likely chance of contracting a staf infection. “Root beer?” I queried. “Ghyah! Another one. Does this place look like it has a children’s menu?” “Another one?” he gestures to the other end of the bar.

Wow.

And there she was.

Hey, I just got shot. Repeatedly.
That’s the only excuse I can think of for not noticing her when I walked through the door.

At the other end of the bar was an exquisite African American lady drinking from a root beer and a glass of water. She had an era less beauty that would be recognized in epoch. That was perceptible to anyone instantly, only slightly less apparent, not because of it was of lesser nature, but because of what it was competing against, was her inherent nobility. Not the corrupted version we’ve come to accept today, mind you. You know, the “My great great great great grand daddy was violent, greedy land grabbing bastard who was so good at it he eventually became legitimate, so I get a title, Woo Hoo” type you see now. Hers had the ancient roots of eminence, grand ideals, and greatness of character. Her ancestors may have led nations, and people will follow her descendants. It’s because of this that the damsel in distress role is not suited for her, she just doesn’t have the faulty programming in her. She also doesn’t appear to be the type of damsel to go out and inflict distress on others. No, she’s the damsel perfectly suited to handle any distress that came her way, much to the consternation of any would be heroes out there. Oh, under closer observation it appears I was mistaken, She was only drinking from the root beer. She playing with the water.

When say I playing I mean she was manipulating it like it was a toy. She would summon up spheres of various sizes and drop them back into the glass, watching the ripple pattern, pausing it, and reversing it if she liked it. It smacked of a nervous habit. That probably meant she was waiting for someone or something to happen, ergo she was here on business. This is good. Anyone who would come here for fun should have ’Damaged Goods’ stamped on their soul.

The bartender eventually came back with my drink and followed my gaze. Well, a mole with cataracts could probably follow my gaze. For some reason he volunteered a little background information on her. “She’s an artist, you know. Hers is a world of magic and dragons, the way it should have been… Much better than the way it was.” His edge softened a bit as he got lost in the uncharted land of wistfulness, but he made a stunning return to form. “And it goes without saying, She’s way out of your league.” He turns and leaves. Gee. Thanks. Probably could have figured that one out on my own. Arsehole.

It was about then my boss decided to show up.

Ok, ‘show up’ may not be the best verb to use here. It could just of easily be ‘allowed me to be aware of its presence’. Oy, that form again. Its nature allows it to assume a plethora of forms to deal with us beings of a lesser plane. Some observed forms that made it into various chronicles in one form or another include huge hulking warriors, abstract creatures that bent your mind by just looking at them, nondescript people you may meet every day, and in one instance, a really hot blond chick, but you had to be a real bastard before you got see that form. When it manifests for me though, it is based on its most famous incarnation, shrunk down into a cute little form. My fellow otaku would recognize it as ’chibi’; I recognize it as a way to get my goat. The body looked like a snake, standing balanced on the lower 1/8th of its body. It’s scales were some shade of purple and looked to be made of semiprecious stone, the ones on the back darker than the ones on the front. There were three sets of wings on it’s back. They maybe be described as peacock feathers only if you could arrange for the greatest artisans in history to get together and pimp your peacock. They were also the colour of malicate. The head was were the snake metaphor fell apart because, while it had some serpentine aspects, the three sets of eyes conveyed way more than ever existed in any reptile. Plus the mouth was wrong but it never opened it anyway. In short, it might look like something you would find in a Poké ball, but the cute would shine right off once you realize it would be G_D’s Poké ball and he would only break it out if you been a very bad, bad boy.

Hm, there’s actually an argument for the ‘boss just getting here’ side. The bartender started to have what could be politely called adverse reactions when I noticed it right there on top of the bar. The barkeep went a few whiter shades of pale while a low and ugly sound emitted from his intestines. Less than a second later his lunch decided it didn’t want anything to do with what was going on down there so it was going back the way it came. In a remarkable feat of contortion and gymnastics, he vaulted over the bar, dislodged of few patrons, bowled over a table, knocking over a few more patrons on his way to the head. I hope he makes it. Effort like that should be rewarded. Simultaneously the lady at the end of the bar slapped both her hands down. It was instantly obvious in what she did because not one ounce of anyone’s drink touched the ground. All the booze hung there like a still frame photograph except it could have been walked around and enjoyed from all perspectives. It could have been but it wasn’t, either the bar flies were not fans of art or they would have rather have finished their drinks more so they used their mugs and glasses to collect up their drinks. The ones at the table had a fair bit of retracing to do over a roughly 2-cubit foot area. She gave everyone around the bar a slight smile and went back to her game. And all the capillaries in my face decided this would be a good time to open fully while it became hard to swallow for a second.

Once I returned myself to base state (I’ve never knew what was ‘normal’ so I improvised) I turned to my occasional patron, sometimes vexation, and namesake to ask what the hell just happened. “Are you familiar with the adolescent posturing to the effect of ‘I am going to smack you so hard your grand children are going to feel it.’” I nodded and the boss continued. “Well that is Alex Morrisey is experiencing right now. Although it is many more generations removed in his case.” My eyes widen “You mean he’s devil spawn?” I hurried to get up, my hands going to my ‘Tools of The Trade’. What, you think it’s wrong to attack someone when they’re ill disposed on the loo? Well you’re a putz. It’s quick, it’s easy, and provided you have ample time, a good hacksaw, and the toilets don’t back up, clean up is a chinch. The boss stopped me with a look “Down tiger, no need to cowboy up today” “But” I tried and the boss continued. “Three reasons: He is your host. That would be unforgivably rude. Second, in this place he would smoke you in less than a minute. Third, he made his choice, for the same reason I am not paying his ancestor underneath the wine cellar, who’s doing his best impression of what he should be in the first place, a rotting corpse, a little visit. They both chose selfish indifference to the war. That is allowable. For now.”

Ok, back to DEFCON 3. I had to ask who was buried in the basement. “Merlin Satanspawn” it replied nonchalantly. You know, some of us would like to think we are immune to the spit take, that we are so stoic that nothing could make us do something so undignified, but the truth is it’s just a matter of scale, and that topped mind out. Luckily the beautiful lady at the other end of the bar chose to ignore this one. Having her hold it there would have pretty much been grounds for breaking out the self-tracheotomy kit (contents: One really sharp knife) and going to town. “So I’m sitting here drinking a F’n root beer on top of {lion roar, train whistle, cymbal crash} Satanspawn’s grave site! Why don’t you ever tell me anything I might want to know?!” It actually looked like it was considering this, “Hm, something you might actually want to know? Let’s see, the young lady over there has tattoo of a…” I give him my very best death stare that’s been known make rabid honey badgers look away (it’s a long story about a serious wrong turn in a zoo). I couldn’t leave it like this. I had to get my dig in (yes I recognize it a suicidal tendency on my part and I’m ok with it. Why aren’t you?)

“So your not going after Merlin because he learned the one lesson that any reasonable person can take away from the New Testament; If you dad ever comes up to says “Son, have I got big plans for you” you should run, not walk, away as fast and as far as you can.” Smugly I wait for my boss’s reply “You know, Mr. Eckman, I am well endured to your assorted blasphemies and heresies, but hypocrisy is a new one and I must say I am disappointed” “What do you mean by ’hypocrisy’?” It answered, “Do you not follow your father’s plan in you daily life” “Ah, semantics, allow me to clarify myself for you. I don’t follow his plan. His plan for me would have me as a fore man at GM with two kids and a dog by now. Well it didn’t work out that way. What I follow is his advice that would be practical under any honest observation. Rule one: Never Volunteer, the only thing eagerness gets you is more work. Rule two: Always be willing to do the shit jobs though. That way you become indispensable.” All three sets of the Arch Angel’s eyes narrowed as it looked at me and it added enigmatically
“Indeed.”

There you have it. Pretty much the entire story came to me on the first day of a weeklong Caribbean cruise. I had no access to a word processor (that seems to be the only way I can write anything) so it just fermented in the back of my brain for the entire trip.
“Why post this now?” you may ask…

Mostly I’m relying on the good possibility that no one will likely read this & those that might engage in much more egregious embarrassing behavior in real life and/or on the interne-tubes. If you want to MST it I must insist that you tell me where it can be viewed ‘cause that would bring me joy. If you really want to stick it to me though you should have me be one of the editors (I would most likely agree to it). Oh Great Cthulhu!

I have been an extremely sedulous devotee this year.

In February, I recruited mercae_killar as a new cultist (30 points). In October, I sacrificed pseudomanitou to Cthulhu (500 points). When the stars were right, I exposed furakushiru to soul-rending horrors (250 points). In July, I called down the wrath of Yog-Sothoth upon thekaraokeninja (65 points). Last week, I legally changed my name to Randolph Carter (-40 points). In November, I defiled the grave of that traitor, Lovecraft (90 points).

In short, I have been very good (895 points) and deserve the honour of having my body used as a host for one of your servitors.

This year I've been busy!

Last Monday I broke furakushiru's X-Box (-12 points). In September I helped sircrazlot hide a body (-173 points). Last Sunday I helped akirashima see the light (8 points). Last month I donated bone marrow to faux_arzen in a life-saving procedure (300 points). In November I put gum in pseudomanitou's hair (-12 points).

My clan will be going to Columbus this weekend to celebrate the fact that my sibling survived another year without one of her gymnasts poisoning her diet Dr Pepper. They allowed her to pick the restaurant so of course we are going to the most expensive one she could find on short notice. So the question I pose is what should I order at a Japanese steak house? I’ve already have been warned about querying the matrade’ about whether the steaks contain real or imitation Japanese.

Also, Serenity opens next week. Could some one, any one, beseech our movie mistress to see if it will be opining at her theater? If that and Corpsebride are there we can make it a double feature. I think I have an idea on what I will want to run but that may change depending on what I find in the bookstores.

You may have noted the lack of anything new here. The reason for that being the formulaic process by which LJ runs. It goes

Angst + copious free time = update

Well, I’m presently in a condition that I’ve long dreamed of that, through luck, perseverance, and probably the best writing I had ever done (and no, you’ll never get to read it. It was for her & her alone) I actually managed to begin a relationship with the most exquisite and beautiful woman in the world. It turns out that having the wonderful girlfriend in my life cures the twin inflictions of angst & free time, so no foreseeable updates for the time being. Besides, I can only really write the good stuff when I’m in various stages of despondence and, if you couldn’t tell, my writing fu sucks now because I’m feeling too damn good. I’ll still log on every couple of days or so to check my friends and keep up on how my liberal sensibilities are being offended this week but I’m not feeling the lj love anymore, and I think I’m better for it.

But on to issues at hand.

Hasenpfeffer Stew Fixins’ Man, would you and your Love Tuber like a ride from Springfield to a more civilized area sometime between the 30th through the 2nd? For the price of liquefied extinct flora extract on the way back to pa, my lady love and I will pick you and any gear you can reasonably fit into a late model sedan up and transport you back to Thed’s. Along the way I also have a paying gig for you before the con. My mom’s comp is a virus loving ho that could use one of your free clinic consultations. What do you think? Natalie has to arrange for the time off zo confirmation one way or the other would be sooner the better.

7 years in my case. The impending lack of a mentor looked like it was going to spell doom (DOOOOM!) for Genshinkin but Terrence found a way around that. It turns out that the qualifications for mentor are relatively minimal. They just have to be affiliated with the university in a non-student role and alumni counts. So next semester I take my first official position as mentor for the Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture. Gee, I hope this doesn’t affect my ability to get a real job (laughs hysterically/falls over dead). Also our outgoing president has either decided to specifically torture me or reveal some deeply of his deeply hidden personal tastes because he brought in real yoai, knowing that, because the Y chromosome faction is now the minority, I can’t get it voted off the screen. It’s called Loveless and it is the pain. It has also been tabled by our Vice President that I’m a homophobe because I pointed out that a strange man kissing a boy in the park was wrong. I just thought it meant I was F’n rational.
